The stylish touches that made the biggest difference to this Berkshire living room
In the previous blog, we discussed the design direction and defined colour palette for this Berkshire living room redesign. Now for the details that make it feel personal, stylish and layered.
Lighting Makes a Room Feel Cosy
There were no table lamps in the room, just two central ceiling pendants and no dimmer. We recommended table lamps in soft blue tones from Marks & Spencer and Addison Ross for a layered glow, plus flush ceiling lights in linen and metal tones with a dimmer for atmosphere and softness. This one change instantly made the space feel cosier and more welcoming in the evenings.
A Small Furniture Layout Change With a Big Impact
One simple but transformative shift was moving the sofa away from the wall and placing a console table behind it. We chose a slimline black metal piece from La Redoute that was both practical and stylish. Pulling furniture away from the wall makes a space feel more grounded and intentional. It also makes the room feel bigger, creating a surface for lamps and books and a styling opportunity for picture, frames and plants.
Mixing in Vintage and Personal Touches
To stop a room feeling too "show home," we always advise weaving in something personal, whether that's a vintage find, a family heirloom or a treasured item. Here, we recommended a vintage aviation book for the coffee table, tying in with a large wall-mounted wooden propeller that held sentimental value for the family. One or two personal pieces are what make a home feel truly yours.
The Final Touch: A Curated Shopping List
Once the layout, direction and colour palette were approved, we pulled together a shopping list of trusted, high street brands with longevity and classic style. With clickable links, the family shopped in their own time and brought the room to life themselves. Now they have the confidence to tackle other rooms in their home too.
The End Result
An elegant, stylish living room that reflects the family's tastes and lifestyle. A space they love spending time in, built on a clear plan and an easy, collaborative process from start to finish.
If a room in your home feels unfinished, I work with families across Berkshire and the South East to create calm, elegant spaces that feel authentic and comfortable.
