An organised wardrobe means a calm start to your day

Emma Duncan Home Styling | Professional Organiser, Berkshire

The morning scramble to get yourself (and often the whole family) out of the door on time is one of the most stressful parts of the day and sets the tone for what follows. It's easy to put yourself at the bottom of the pile when it comes to getting organised, but when you're sorted, everything else runs more smoothly too.

I always think of it like the safety advice on a flight: put your own oxygen mask on before helping others 😂 An organised wardrobe is your oxygen mask. It's one of the few spaces in your home that you have complete control over and when it works for you, mornings become calmer, quicker, and less stressful.

Why an Organised Wardrobe is the Secret to a Stress-Free Morning

Beyond saving you time in the morning, an organised wardrobe has some wider benefits. When you can clearly see everything you own, you shop smarter and stop buying duplicates. Research has suggested that people in the UK have billions of pounds' worth of unworn clothing sat in their wardrobes which is such a waste of money, space and mental energy. A well-organised wardrobe helps you buy less, wear more, and feel better about what you own.

As a professional organiser who has been in plenty of wardrobes, here are my six steps to making it happen.

1. Declutter Regularly — and Make It Enjoyable

Regular decluttering is the foundation of an organised wardrobe but it only works if you actually do it. Put a recurring reminder in your diary for a time that suits you, stick to it and make it as enjoyable as possible by playing on your favourite playlist or making a cup of tea. Set a timer so you don't feel overwhelmed and have bin bags at the ready so you can get donations out the door promptly.

The most efficient approach is to take everything out and review by category (all trousers together, all t-shirts together, and so on). Short on time? Just tackle one category at a time. If you need some help with what is a tough stage, get in contact with me to see how I can help.

2. Organise Your Wardrobe in a Way That Works for You

Once you've decluttered, think about how you naturally choose an outfit. Do you start with colour? Build around the bottom half first? Or is factoring in the weather key for you? Think about your weekly routine and what kind of clothing you need to access quickly.

My personal approach is to organise by colour first, then sub-categorise within that. All my black tops are together, then divided into jumpers, shirts, t-shirts, and sleeveless and I do the same with trousers. This means I can pull together an outfit in minutes and easily see what I have when I'm out shopping. There's no right answer and the best system is the one that reflects your personal requirements. If you work with me, we will figure that out together!

3. Invest in Slimline Velvet Hangers

This is one of the simplest and most impactful upgrades you can make. Switching to matching black slimline velvet hangers saves significant space on your rail and creates a calm, visually consistent look. It's a tiny investment that makes a big difference to how your wardrobe feels every time you open it. I can recommend these hangers from Amazon.

4. Use Clever Hanging Hacks to Maximise Your Space

Working with a limited wardrobe layout? These are my professional organiser hacks! If you only have a short double-hanging rail and nowhere to hang dresses full-length, use two hangers linked together to extend the drop and keep longer items off the rail below. If you have the opposite problem (one long rail with wasted space underneath) a secondary hanging rod ( available on Amazon) adds an extra tier of hanging space instantly. Alternatively, slide a chest of drawers underneath the rail to make use of the depth and height you have.

5. File-Fold Your Clothes into Drawers

Folding clothes and stacking them on top of each other is one of the biggest causes of wardrobe chaos as you can only ever see the item on top. The vertical folding (or "file folding") method from Marie Kondo changes everything as items are folded and filed upright in the drawer so you can see every single piece at a glance, just like flicking through files in a cabinet.

It also makes packing for trips much faster as you can simply grab what you need and transfer it into your suitcase. The IKEA Skubb drawer organisers are brilliant for keeping everything neatly contained and used by professional organisers all the time.

6. Choose Your Outfit the Night Before

A simple idea but transformative. Laying out your outfit the evening before including accessories, jewellery, and a bag means you wake up to zero wardrobe decisions or morning panic. All you need is a hook on the back of your bedroom or bathroom door to make it a habit.

Organised Wardrobe, Organised Mind

A stylishly organised wardrobe isn't a luxury but an act of self-care that brings calm, confidence and control to your day. Whether you have a full dressing room or half a rail and a single drawer, the principles are the same: declutter, organise in a way that suits you, and maintain it.

As a professional organiser based in Berkshire, I work with clients to transform their wardrobes and living spaces into places that support their lives. If you're ready to take back your mornings, I'd love to help!
