5 ways to create an inspiring and productive workspace at home
Written by Emma Duncan Home Styling | Professional Organiser, Berkshire
Working from home is here to stay and if your home workspace feels more chaotic than calm, you're not alone. As a professional organiser based in Berkshire, I help clients transform cluttered, uninspiring workspaces into organised, beautiful rooms that support how they work. Here are my five favourite tips for creating a home workspace that boosts productivity and wellbeing, whether you are an interior designer, a creative maker, an artist or a desk-bound work from home professional.
1. Maximise Natural Light
Position your desk or work table as close to a window as possible. Natural light doesn't just make a room feel brighter and more inviting, it also supports your circadian rhythm, helping you stay focused throughout the working day. If your home workspace has limited windows, layer warm artificial lighting into your scheme.
2. Declutter Your Desk, Declutter Your Mind
A tidy workspace is one of the single most effective ways to improve focus. When your space is clear, your brain isn't constantly processing visual noise and that means better concentration and less stress.
Invest in storage that works and looks good. I often recommend acrylic accessories (B&M Stores have a stylish and affordable range) for a sleek, minimal feel, or natural wood tones if you want something warmer and more tactile. For paperwork, a simple "To File" folder is a game-changer: drop loose papers in as they arrive, then set a regular diary reminder to sort and file them into clearly labelled categories. Out of sight, out of mind and back in control.
3. Personalise Your Space with Purpose
A home workspace should feel like yours. Surrounding yourself with things that bring you joy like a piece of artwork your kids made you, a scented candle or a family photo can lift your mood and keep you motivated. The key is intentionality so choose a few meaningful pieces rather than filling every surface, so the effect is inspiring rather than overwhelming.

4. Invest in an Ergonomic Setup
Your chair and desk setup matter. Poor posture leads to discomfort which chips away at your productivity. A supportive chair, a desk at the right height, and a screen positioned at eye level can make a difference to how you feel by the end of the day and how much you get done.
My recommendation for an ergonomic chair is from the Humanscale range. They are pricey but tt's the kind of investment that pays for itself in terms of how you feel at your desk every day. It will save your back in the long run too.
5. Set Boundaries Between Work and Home Life
One of the biggest challenges of working from home is knowing when to just switch off. Designate specific work hours and where possible, a dedicated area of your home that is just for work (not in your bedroom though). This physical and psychological separation helps you focus fully when you're working and relax when you're not.
